SOCIETY & BOARDS

  • » About TBS Click for information...

Turkish Biochemistry Society (TBS) was founded in 1975 at Ankara with the purpose of bringing all biochemists and molecular biologists together under the same umbrella. The Society has developed over years and become one of the leading national foundations in Turkey with three branches in metropolitan cities, namely, İstanbul, İzmir, Adana with over 2500 members.

TBS has been the member of FEBS (Federation of European Biochemical Societies) and IUBMB (International Union of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology) since 1978. TBS later has become a member of BCLF (Balkan Clinical Laboratory Federation, 1996), IFCC-LM (International Federation of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine, 1997), EFLM (European Federation of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine, 1997) and WASPaLM’s (World Association of Society of Pathologists and Laboratory Medicine, 2013). Besides, TBS has taken part in BBBD (Balkan Biochemical Biophysical Days, 1977) entity. An average of 500-900 people attended BCLF, BBBD and BAB meetings.

TBS, has held twenty seven national congresses, three BCLF meetings, three BBBD, one BAB (Balkan Association of Biosciences), one FEBS and one IFCC Worldlab meeting. While previously national congresses were held around every 18 months, they are being organized annually since 2005. What is more, these meetings are open to international speakers and participants.

As for the 31st FEBS congress, 2436 biochemists from 67 countries, 1148 of which are from our country, attended. All abstracts (1350 by number) were prublished in “The FEBS Journal”.

IFCC Worldlab Congress which is held every three years, was successfully held in İstanbul on June 22-26, 2014. The number of participants in the congress peaked with 5200 people. Proportional to this, 1619 abstracts were presented in the congress. Sister federations; AACC (American Association for Clinical Chemistry), COLABIOCLI (Latin America Confederation of Clinical Biochemistry), EFLM (European Federation of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine), AFCB (Arab Federation of Clinical Biology), AFCC (African Federation for Clinical Chemistry), APFCB (Asia-Pacific Federation for Clinical Biochemistry and Laboratory Medicine), BCLF and WASPaLM supported WorldLab/İstanbul with one symposium each. In the Congress, 26 symposiums were held in each of which five speakers have participated. There were also 23 Industrial Scientific Workshops (ISW) organized by the IFCC's five symposiums and diagnostic firms. Two "Satellite" meetings and an applied LC-MS / MS course were held before the congress. In the Congress, TBS provided full registration scholarships to 130 young scientists, free participation to more than 10 pre-graduate medical faculty students, while IFCC sponsored 19 young researchers with travel and accommodation scholarships.
The abstracts of the presentations at the Congress were published in the Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine journal, which is the publication body of our foundation, starting from 2011 until 2017. TBS finally brought the 41st FEBS Congress, which would be held in Izmir Kuşadası on 3-8 September 2016, but this big event was unfortunately cancelled by the FEBS.

TBS also organizes training sessions for pre- and post-graduate educators in basic sciences and medicine; In the past, four such meetings were organized together with the IUBMB in 1989, 1992, 1998 and 2000.

TBS aims to play a pioneering role in clinical biochemistry. In this context: With the purpose of improving the quality of "Clinical Chemistry Education", in selected topics related to clinical biochemistry; "International Quality Control and Standardization of Clinical Laboratories", "Accreditation of Clinical Laboratories", "Analytical Quality Management in Clinical Laboratories" and internationally participated "Laboratory-Based Medicine", "Biostatistics", "Project Development and Writing", "Molecular Diagnostic Techniques" "Methodology Validation and Verification", "Interactive Laboratory Applications", "Data Mining", "Clinical Laboratory Management", "Electrophoresis Applications", "Mass Spectrometry Applications", "Primer and Sequester Haemostasis Tests", "Laboratory Tests for Haemoglobinopathy and Thalassemia" etc. organized nearly 100 workshops / courses. TBS is also the owner of Turkish Journal of Biochemistry (TJB) which has started publishing in 1976. TJB was previously published four times a year with original research articles and compilations made in biochemistry and related fields. The journal is indexed in Chemical Abstracts since 1979 and in SCI Expanded, Journal of Citation Reports / Science Edition (SCIE-2007), Index of Open Access Journals, Index Copernicus, Embase, Scopus, Ulakbim Turkish Medical Index, Ulrich's Periodical Directory, EBSCO, Turkey Atif Index since 2002. The journal, is published six times a year in English, under the De Gruyter roof since 2015 and is available at http://www.turkjbiochem.com
